You Will Never Guess How Many Conditions Are Caused by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

Posted in Women on Feb 19, 2016

Did you know that a new study has revealed over 428 distinct disease conditions that co-occur in people with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD)?

According to Dr. Lana Popova, a lead author from the study done by Researchers from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, “We’ve systematically identified numerous disease conditions co-occurring with FASD, which underscores the fact that it isn’t safe to drink any amount or type of alcohol at any stage of pregnancy, despite the conflicting messages the public may hear.”

The conflicting messages that the public may hear that the study refers to are myths that “one glass of wine is fine to drink while pregnant.” Even one glass, as the study finds, can cause FASD in newborns; FASD is the term used to describe a range of disabilities that can occur in individuals as a result of alcohol exposure before birth.

While many mothers get help from a women’s sober living home long before they get pregnant, some do not. As a result, the study found that infants born to mothers who drank had co-occurring problems with conduct. Some of these issues include communications disorders, developmental and cognitive disorders, along with attention and hyperactivity problems.

Popova shared that “we can prevent these issues at many stages.” One way to prevent any issues is by expectant mothers receiving help from halfway houses in Florida. Not only will they be educated about the possible dangers of FASD, but they will also have a place to go to for any help that is needed along the way.
