The Entrepreneurial Alcoholic’s Resume: Fluent in Alcoholism

Posted in Addictions, Rehab on Jul 14, 2014

Enjoying alcohol does not make you an alcoholic. In fact, alcoholism is not drinking. It is the inability to slow down, cut down, or stop altogether. Just like you cannot unlearn a language, you cannot unlearn alcoholism. Sure, you can stop using a language and perhaps forget some of the words, but it always comes back to you. You will always be fluent.

The Language of Alcohol

Alcoholism is a language all of its own. It is a learned practice, and a permanent condition of having a habit is the desire. Learning to overcome seemingly impossible situations clicks for some, but for others it does not come that easily. Support in such instances helps you embrace the challenges and add a new level of comfort with your decision to live your life alcohol-free.

Revise Your Resume

Connecting with others who are familiar with the journey you are on or are about to face creates a safety net of support for slowing down and extinguishing the behavior. They truly understand that years from now you will still be working to change your life. Realize that sobriety is a work in progress your whole life. You will never be recovered; you will always be recovering. Life goes sideways; that is a fact. The trick is revising your resume by discovering new ways to react so that you never need to speak alcoholism again.
