Methadone & Pregnancy

Posted in Addictions on Oct 13, 2014

Pregnant women who are avid drug users question whether methadone is safe for their unborn baby. Although methadone and other opiates have not been directly linked to birth defects, there are common effects that have occurred on unborn fetuses. The most common side effects that are questionably associated with methadone use are low birth weight, small head size, and withdrawal symptoms. Although babies gain weight rather quickly and their head size increases, the effects of withdrawal are what can be fatal to a fetus.

It is important for all pregnant women to remember that whatever they consume, so does their baby. Smoking cigarettes, using drugs, and malnutrition, affects the health of unborn babies. Moreover, your overall health will affect your baby’s overall health.

Remember that it is never a good idea to attempt detox at your home; it can be life threatening to you and your baby. If you or someone you know is pregnant and trying to detox off of methadone, make sure that they are in a medically safe environment or center, where the mother and baby can be monitored 24/7 for any change in health and distress.

If you are seeking help for methadone detoxification, then call the professionals at Awakenings for Women and find out how we can help you 1 (412) 822-0065.
