How To Cope With Addiction in Your Family

Posted in Addictions on Nov 03, 2014

Dealing with addiction in your family can be very challenging and life altering. Sometimes the addict fails to realize just how painful and toxic their addiction is to not only themselves, but also to their loved ones. If you are suffering with an addiction in your family, there is a lot of help available for you, your family, and your addicted loved one.
While coping with an addiction in your family, you can utilize these helpful practices as needed.
1. Communication- Communication is key when dealing with an addicted loved one. It is important that they know just how much you love them and that you are there for them no matter what the future holds. They must always be reminded of your support throughout their addiction and recovery.

2. Support- Often times families give their addicted loved one an ultimatum: “It’s your family or the drugs”. You have to understand that their bodies and minds are physically addicted to these substances and their bodies crave them. If they end up choosing their addiction over you, it is not what their heart desires, but rather what their body and mind desires.

3. Unconditional Love- Family is family, and it is important that they know you will always love them no matter what.

Getting professional help is also a necessary step towards breaking addiction, and this means help for your family as well. Learn more about how Awakenings for Women can help you by calling our addiction hotline at 1 (412) 822-0065.
