Don’t Just Eat: Nourishing Yourself After Recovery

Posted in Addictions on Jun 09, 2014

Has it been years since you ate something that wasn’t frozen, deep-fried, or handed to you through a drive-thru window? One of the single most important gifts you can give yourself after completing your addiction treatment program is the gift of learning to cook healthy, nourishing meals for yourself on a daily basis. Establishing the daily habit of preparing nutritious meals is very important to helping your body recover from addiction. Here are two big tips to help you on your journey to better, healthier living.

Eat Your Greens

Introducing fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet is one of the best and easiest ways to help your body get the nutrients it needs. Dark leafy greens, in particular, have fiber, minerals, vitamins, and plant-based substances that can help you stay healthy and fight off future diseases. Swiss chard, kale, spinach, collards, and broccoli are all great examples of dark leafy greens. Hate the taste? Read on.

Juice!

If you’re not a fan of eating leafy greens, it’s time to invest in a juicer. When done in the proper ratios, a fruit-and-veggie smoothie that’s heavy on the apple and banana can easily accommodate a healthy helping of dark leafy greens without the majority of the taste coming through. Smoothies are the perfect on-the-go meal; they’re a breeze to make at home, and are as portable as a cup of coffee.
