3 Reasons to Get and Stay Sober

Posted in Addictions on May 04, 2014

The road to becoming clean and sober is a difficult one. Along the way, you may often ask yourself why you are doing it – and whether the benefits will really outweigh the short-term hardship. In times like these, it can be useful to refer to a list. There are, in fact, hundreds of reasons to get clean and stay sober. Here are just some of those reasons you can refer back to when things get tough.

Health

The affect of long term alcohol and drugs on the body is catastrophic. They are literally toxins to your body, and besides risking serious diseases such as cancer, drugs and alcohol cause your hair and skin to look worse. Getting sober means an improvement in overall health, including an increase in energy and quality of sleep. Plus, you will never wake up with a hangover again.

Family and Relationships

Drinking and using are almost as hard on family and friends as they are on you – if not more so. If your attitude towards life is positive and health-focused, others will enjoy your company more and want to have a meaningful relationship with you. Committing to anything in life becomes easier when sober – be it relationships or other goals.

Enjoyment of Life

Most of all, it is possible for you to enjoy life to the fullest only when sober. While the drugs and alcohol may have been temporarily relieving pain or discontent, they inevitably were leading to much bigger problems themselves. You will be respected by others and have the ability to stay in control of your own life. This alone is reason enough to stick with the goal of becoming and staying sober.
