Dealing With Depression in Addiction Recovery

Posted in Addictions on Nov 06, 2014

While in drug or alcohol addiction recovery, it is common for most patients to deal with depression. The number of depressed, newly recovering addicts is much higher in women than in men. Although experts do not have a definitive answer as to why this occurs, they believe that it may have to do with women feeling as though they are abandoning or leaving their families behind in order to get help, making depression much more likely. Another important thing to keep in mind is that addiction affects men and women differently, taking a larger toll on women than on men.

If you or a loved one are currently suffering from depression in addiction recovery then you need to make sure that you seek the necessary help. Make sure you are getting the help that you need right away and are continuing to talk about how you are feeling and what triggers these feelings with your addiction counselor.

Depression is not something that will just go away on its own, it is something that needs to be addressed and medically and professionally handled. Do not feel as if you are alone, depression is a very common side effect to addiction recovery and fortunately there is a lot of help available.
