Why Prescription Drug Abuse Is So High Among College Students

Posted in News on Jun 06, 2018

Throughout recent years, prescription drug abuse among college students have continued to rise. More and more young adults have found themselves needing the help of a Florida sober living home in order to help battle their prescription drug abuse problem.

The question still remains as to why prescription drug abuse is so common on college campuses. Considering that one in four people between the ages of 18 and 20 years old have admitted to abusing drugs at least once in their lives, this is clearly a problem that shows no sign of going away any time soon.

Make sure that your teens are protected from potential prescription drug abuse by staying in the know about which prescription drugs are the most commonly abused.

Stimulants. One of the most rapidly growing medications that is contributing to prescription drug abuse among young adults, stimulants are most commonly used among college students for studying. Stimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall are both habit forming and extremely dangerous.

Opioid Painkillers. Widely considered one of the main culprits for prescription drug abuse on college campuses, opioid painkillers are one of the bigger reasons why college students find themselves needing help from a Florida sober living home.

Sedatives. Benzodiazepines used to treat anxiety and sleeplessness, such as Xanax, are commonly abused by college students due to the incredible amount of stress they face at school. Sedatives are the most dangerous due to the deadly effect they can have when couple with alcohol.
