Ways to Help Protect Your Child from Drug Abuse

Posted in drug abuse on Sep 01, 2015

Many parents avoid the subject of drugs because they are not sure how to bring it up to their kids. While children and teens will have questions about drugs as they get older, chances are that their parents will have even more.

Don’t skate around the subject and avoid talking to your kids about drug addiction. In order to help protect your child from drug abuse, make sure you check out these tips from Boca Raton’s women’s sober living home, Awakenings for Women.

Create Boundaries

Some parents are too strict on their kids, resulting in them lashing out and rebelling later on in life. On the other hand, some parents do not enforce the rules enough, thus leaving too much gray area. Create boundaries that have clear consequences if crossed. If your child understands and respects your rules, then you will more easily be able to steer them away from substance abuse.

Role Model

As your kids get older, it might be tempting to share stories of alcohol or drug use from your younger years. However, unless those stories come with a lesson, they should be kept to yourself. The last thing you want is your children to get the impression that they think you are okay with them abusing drugs.

Speak UpJust because you are nervous about bringing up the topic of drugs and alcohol to your kids, does not mean that it gets you off the hook. Addressing the issue of substance abuse earlier rather than later will prove invaluable. According to the Partnership at Drugfree.org, children who learn about the dangers of substance abuse from their parents are up to 50 percent less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol.
