The Surprising Drink That Reduces the Risk of Liver Cancer

Posted in Addictions, alcohol, Alcohol Abuse, health, healthcare, News on May 18, 2015

Coffee drinkers everywhere rejoice – a recent study revealed that drinking coffee reduces liver cancer risks caused by excessive alcohol consumption.

The study focused on 34 scientific studies, with data from over 8 million people with over 24,600 cases of liver cancer. While drinking an upwards of three alcoholic drinks a day greatly increased the chances of getting liver cancer, drinking coffee regularly can mitigate the chances of getting it by almost 14%.

According to researchers of the study, “mechanisms that support a protective effect of coffee on liver cancer relate largely to studies in animals, although some human studies contribute to the evidence. Both coffee and coffee extracts have also been shown to reduce the expression of genes involved in inflammation, and the effects appear to be most pronounced in the liver.”

One of the main reasons why alcohol is responsible for contributing to cancer is because it has alfatoxins in it. Alfatoxins are a type of mold typically found in alcohol, as researchers explained; “Aflatoxins are produced by inadequate storage of food, and are generally an issue related to foods from warmer, developing regions of the world. Foods that may be affected by aflatoxins include cereals, spices, peanuts, pistachios, Brazil nuts, chilies, black pepper, dried fruit and figs.”

While there is no question that coffee helps eradicate the harmful effects of alcohol, researchers did explain that they need more information before they can clearly explain why.
