Relapse Prevention Techniques for the Holidays
With the holidays right around the corner, it is important that you and your counselor have come up with a relapse prevention plan that implements effective techniques to make sure that you avoid a relapse.
Part of being in addiction recovery is finding out who we really are, what triggers us, and what works best for us. Keep in mind that everyone is different and what might work for others, might not work for you. That is why you, your counselor, and your sponsor must work closely in order to find out what is the best route for you and your road to addiction recovery.
Some effective relapse prevention techniques that you can try this holiday season are:
-Planning: Plan your holidays in advance and make sure that you keep these plans. Make sure that your plans are with your support system or other people in addiction recovery, and at a place where you know there will be no alcohol or drugs present.
-Avoidance: Avoid any situation that you think might trigger you to relapse. Do not try to be so strong that you choose to be around substances that you used to abuse. Avoid situations as much as possible and find something else to do that will be clean and fun for you.
