New Study Reveals Just How Bad Alcohol Addiction Is for Women

Posted in Alcohol Abuse, Women on May 08, 2016

“Does binge drinking affect women more than men?”

Sure, everyone who has been to a halfway house in Florida has heard the question asked before, but have we ever truly gotten an answer? There are dilemmas that women suffering from an alcohol addiction have to face that men don’t, but does it really change how binge drinking affects the fairer of the two genders, or are we just talking about it more?

According to a recent study, binge drinking for both men and women have increased dramatically throughout recent years; specifically, alcohol addiction has risen 17.2% since 2005, ultimately increasing the number of people seeking help from a halfway house in Florida. However, binge drinking among women has risen at an alarming rate that is seven times greater than among men.

With numbers that are drastically higher than the rate of their male counterparts, one researcher revealed, “It seems like women are trying to catch up with men in binge drinking…it’s really scary.” They went on to share that, “Nationwide, women showed a much faster escalation in binge drinking than men, with rates rising 17.5% between 2005 and 2012; men on the other hand, saw rates of binge drinking increase 4.9%.”

While choosing the right halfway house in Florida can help in overcoming an alcohol addiction, it does not reverse all of the adverse effects of binge drinking. Women certainly have the shorter end of the stick when it comes to dealing with the health implications of their life choices; they are at higher risk of developing liver disease than men, and are more susceptible to getting brain damage from drinking.
