Make Sobriety a Reality

Posted in Addictions, Recovery, Rehab on Jul 05, 2014

If you think you have a drinking problem, you probably do. Granted, you have managed to keep a job, maintain a relationship, manage family life, and pay the bills without anyone being the wiser. Still, you find yourself wishing that your pretend life could be your real life. When you pass the point of pretending, take the steps to transition into the life you desire.

1. Quit publicly. The key to quitting involves reaching out to the people you encounter on a day-to-day basis. Make them aware that you acknowledge you have a problem in your life that you intend to fix. These people are your support group.

2. Accept the possibility of failure. Relapses happen, and one mistake is average. It is the second (and the third, and so on) that signals warning flags that your attempt to quit has fallen short. Starting over means you have to stop apologizing for being human so that you can get back to reinventing your life.

3. Be honest. Lying to yourself allows you to lie to those whom you love. The truth nearly always gets a better reaction than lying. This concept remains one of the most difficult ones, especially since you have been living a lie for so long.

Realizing that two steps forward might mean taking shorter strides. Be true to yourself and your word: make your pretend life, your real life. Sobriety is something you can achieve, and we can help you.
