Long-Term Effects of Cocaine

Posted in Addictions on Dec 21, 2014

If you or a loved one have a past history of cocaine use then it is important that you are aware of the long-term effects that it can have on your body.

Cocaine is a powerfully addictive drug, making it difficult to determine the duration of time and the frequency of use in an active cocaine abuse case.

Another factor that cocaine users or friends and family of cocaine users should look out for, is tremendous cravings that typically occur whenever a user is around anything that reminds them of using. Keeping an eye out for routine cravings in a particular place, around a particular person, or at a particular event, are ways that you can initiate avoidance for the user.

After repeated use of cocaine, your brain starts to adapt, and your reward sensors for natural reinforcers become less profound. In conjunction, your tolerance will increase, which means that your body will require higher doses in order to achieve a “high-like” effect.

With every use of cocaine you are increasing your irritability levels, risk of panic attacks, restlessness, and are even in danger of experiencing full-blown psychosis, which can lead to permanent psychological and physiological problems.

Some of the long-term effects from snorting cocaine can be: loss of sense of smell, nosebleeds, and a deviated septum.
If you ingest cocaine then you are at risk of bowel gangrene, and if cocaine is injected then you can experience an allergic reaction, both of which can be fatal. Chronic cocaine users often lose their appetite completely, resulting in severe weight loss and extreme malnourishment.
