How to Get Relationship Advice While in Recovery

Posted in health, healthcare, Recovery, Sober Living, Staying sober, Women on May 22, 2015

For those in recovery from addiction, many are probably wondering to themselves where to start when it comes to getting relationship advice post a life of substance abuse. Not only that, but how do you even date sober?

Most people who are new in recovery may have never even dated sober, and as a result, have little to no coping mechanisms when it comes to handling the daily trials and tribulations of a sober relationship. Consequently, there are multiple resources out there for those going through this struggle. Navigating the dating world without advice, does not have to be difficult after choosing to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Check out these ways to get relationship advice while in recovery:

  1. Books. There are countless amounts of books out there that cover this very subject. Jay Westbrook, speaker and author who specializes in substance abuse recovery, recommends The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by John Gottman & Nan Silver, and Hold Me Tight by Sue Johnson. Both books come highly recommended and have tons of useful advice.
  2. Workshop. If you find that a book just does not cut it in terms of handling your relationship dilemmas, then there are many workshops out there that are geared specifically towards handling this type of issue. Westbrook recommends one in particular – the Couples Communication Workshop for couples that have at least one person in recovery. The workshop does not have therapy, but instead focuses on couples sharing their experience, strength, and hope with each other on how they have sober fun.
