How to Celebrate Mother’s Day While Living Sober

Posted in Sober Holidays, Sober Living on May 01, 2016

For those who are new to living sober, the holidays can seem overwhelming. After all, they are usually reminders of family events that ended poorly due to their substance abuse, and are filled with painful memories of mistakes past. Considering that most holidays are centered around drinking, it is easy to see why your mom would be hesitant to put on her party hat.

Luckily, with the help of Awakenings for Women, this Mother’s Day has the potential to be the best yet. Why is this? Because it will be the first Mother’s Day your mom will actually be able to remember because she is sober.

Make sure this May 8th is filled with positive energy and a new found hope for the future with this guide on how to make sure your mom stays sober this Mother’s Day.

Focus on the positive. This year, make Mother’s Day special by not only focusing on your mom, but also by celebrating all of her accomplishments regarding to living sober. Take this time to talk about how far your mom has come, and how proud you are of all her progress she has made at Awakenings for Women.

Offer to help. Nothing will make your mom feel more special on Mother’s Day other than offering to help make sure she focuses on living sober. Simple ways to do this include offering to go with her to follow-up appointments, and to remind her of any sober meetings she has on her calendar.
