Generation Heroin Highlights Drug Problem in Palm Beach

Posted in Recovery on Feb 01, 2017

Many people are aware that our nation has been struggling with an opioid crisis, but it seems the statistics themselves are not evoking the emotional response our country needs for an actionable solution. The toll that heroin is taking in South Florida has become too loud to ignore. A new project has been created in efforts to highlight the deadly heroin epidemic that has been tearing apart families across South Florida over the last few years. The sober living facility for women says “Generation Heroin”, a projected released by The Palm Beach Post, spotlights 216 people that have died of a heroin overdose in Palm Beach County in 2015 alone.

Generation Heroin tells the story of each person who battled, and ultimately lost, to a heroin addiction in the span of one year. Investigators poured through hundreds of toxicology reports and spoke to family members to build the project, which shows the faces of each life stolen – students, animal lovers, musicians, lawyers, blue collar workers, veterans, and parents. These people were unable to receive proper treatment in time, and some even died in public, or were discovered by their own children.

The Palm Beach Post’s attempt to tell each person’s heartbreaking story is a grand effort to bring real emotion to the forefront of this crisis. The sober living facility for women says the goal of the project is to help community members understand that this drug is taking ahold of people in every social class, from every kind of background, and at every age. Generation Heroin humanizes the epidemic that local and national papers seemingly ignore. The project has received major support from those in recovery, treatment advocates, and local community members.
