Finding Your Purpose In Recovery
When it comes to substance abuse, recovery is a daily struggle. One of the most important things that you will learn in addiction recovery is the importance of finding purpose. We are also taught to believe in a higher power, whatever that higher power may be to you specifically, and we must believe that there is purpose for us out in the world.
Finding purpose is expected to take some time. The first few weeks of recovery, we are focused on our health and handling withdrawal symptoms effectively and comfortably. The key is to not dwell on finding our purpose, it is to follow our treatment plan and when we get there, we get there.
As long as you are not using alcohol or drugs, every day you will become one step closer to your goals. Set your goals at the beginning of recovery and cross them off as your complete them. Reward yourself in a positive and healthy way every time you reach a goal. Rewards can be personal gifts like that shirt you have been wanting, a mini vacation, or perhaps a spa day.
Remember to always reward yourself for your good behavior. It will give you something to look forward to and something to make yourself feel good about while on the road to recovery.
