3 Things to Remember for Successful Addiction Treatment

Posted in Addictions, Recovery, Rehab, Sober Living, Staying sober on Jul 18, 2014

Choosing to enroll in an addiction treatment program is a wonderful decision that will change your life for the better. Whether you or a loved one are beginning the road to recovery, know that you’ve chosen to regain control of your life. While this is a huge achievement, there are a few things to keep in mind as you begin your journey toward renewal.

No One-Size-Fits-All Approach

Treatment is different for everyone, so throw your expectations out the door. Everyone has different needs, and every program is customized to meet those needs. For example, not everyone needs to undergo detox at the start of treatment. Further, the length of time spent in a treatment program differs for everyone. Remember going into the process that it is not about a specific time length; it’s about making the commitment to get better.

Address Underlying Factors

Detox and ceasing physical dependencies are usually just step one of the recovery process. Successful treatment hinges on the ability to address underlying factors that led to the addiction in the first place. During your program, expect counselors to work with you one on one to process past trauma, interpersonal and psychological factors that led to addiction so you can start a new, healthy life with keen awareness.

It’s Not Easy All the Time

Treatment may very well be one of the hardest things you will go through, but it is nothing compared to the chronic anguish of lifelong addiction. Know that it won’t always be easy, but it is well worth it for the opportunity to regain control of your life. When you go into treatment, make the commitment to get better no matter what and you will set yourself up for success.
