3 Common Culprits of Added Stress

Posted in healthcare on Apr 06, 2015

Find yourself stressed out more than normal? Maintaining sobriety once you are done with addiction treatment, never proves to be an easy task, but there are ways to make the process easier on yourself and those around you.

One of the ways, is to eradicate some of the roots of the stress – take a look at this list and make sure that you have not been overlooking the culprit the entire time.

  1. Other Half. No matter how much you may love your significant other, after a certain amount of time you will inevitably do something that begins to get on each other’s nerves. Constantly arguing over little issues can equal a big amount of added stress. If this is the case, associate professor of psychiatry at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center, advises to try and find balance by spending the right amount of time together, remember to keep communication flowing, and reaffirm what you love about each other on a daily basis.
  2. Little Things. The phrase “don’t sweat the small stuff” might be easier said than done; however, in the grand scheme of things, you would be amazed what a significant difference it makes on your day to day life. Chances are, getting upset over having to wait an extra ten minutes in line at the grocery store is not the end of the world, and it is better to just to let it go and to actively choose the mood you want to be in.
  3. Other People. Surrounding yourself with toxic friends will, in the long run, only end up stressing you out. Especially when you are early in recovery and need to focus on maintaining your sobriety – it is imperative to make sure you are surrounding yourself with people who do not just live for the drama, and instead, take into account your needs.
