How to Best Support an Addict

Posted in Addictions on Oct 02, 2017

It can be hard to know the right things to say or do when you are the friend or family member of an addict. You want to be supportive, but you also want to give them their space to deal with the major life changes that are happening. What is the best way to support an addict and ensure you’re not enabling them?

When you are worried about your loved one, make sure you learn about the addiction you think they face. One great way to support them is to offer not to drink or take drugs alongside them. Boundaries are important. If your loved one refuses help, it is important to stay supportive.

Once your loved one is in treatment, you can help support them in several ways. Helping them find a therapist and attending therapy together is a great way to help maintain and heal relationships. When a person is busy with recovery, they may slip in other areas of life. Show your support by helping them keep up with the rest of their lives, whether helping them keep on top of their bills, doctor appointments, and more.

Offering rides to and from treatment and attending visiting hours regularly are also great ways to support your loved one through this difficult time. If your loved one is staying in a sober house or sober living facility like Awakenings for Women, make time to go to dinner or spend time with them at least once a week. They will look forward to seeing you and taking a break from their everyday routine.
